Helping dog owners find the root causes of their pet's behavioural problems.
Understanding dog behaviour can be complicated and very frustrating for owners. This is why it is important for owners to address behaviour issues with their veterinarian. Here at Coxwell Animal Clinic, we encourage consultations with the veterinarian to discuss behaviour concerns. We can help address underlying problems that may be leading to behaviour changes in your dog.
When struggling with dog behaviour, whether it’s inappropriate elimination in the house, barking excessively, or aggression, it is important to consult with a veterinarian or behaviourist to understand why your dog is acting this way. Remember that dogs are not trying to be spiteful or mean when they are exhibiting unwanted behaviour. Instead, there may be something affecting them in their environment that results in the behaviour they’re displaying. By meeting with a team member, we can help get to the root of the problem and develop a plan to correct it.
Our veterinarians can go over a thorough history and help investigate what may be the underlying cause of these behaviour signs and what we can do to address them. In addition to this, the veterinarian will also perform a thorough physical exam to assess whether there may be a physical component to the behaviour. Based on the findings of the consultation, we will aim to make a plan for how to address the behaviour and how to monitor results.
This depends on the individual insurance company. It is recommended to contact your insurance company and investigate.
This will depend on what was seen or diagnosed during the consultation. It should be expected that there will be behaviour modification and training exercises that will be recommended. Based on the plan, there will be a follow-up to assess if the plan has addressed the changes. It may be recommended to go to additional training classes or behaviour classes. In some cases, there may be medication recommended for behaviour problems but this is case dependent.
