What is an RVT?
A Registered Veterinary Technologist/Technician (RVT) is a person who has successfully graduated from an accredited Animal Health Technology/Technician, Veterinary Technician/Technologist college program, has completed the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) and has met all the requirements identified by their provincial or state association.
In Canada, Animal Health Technology/Technician, Veterinary Technician/Technologist college programs are accredited by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA), and in Ontario by the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT).
The RVT/VT in Canada is to be up to date on many tasks. Anesthesia, radiology, laboratory, pharmacy technology are examples of the many duties that require adaptation and change as technology advances are made. Technicians that work in the field of laboratory medicine attend the same program as clinical technicians. Technicians are employable in many different areas, veterinary clinics, zoos, feedlots, laboratories, etc.

Amy
An animal lover through and through, Amy decided early on that she wanted to pursue a career that included her working with animals. Graduating from Seneca College in 2008, she soon after became a Registered Veterinary Technician. She has focused her technician career on several skill sets particular to her interests and desires. Amy has focused on perfecting laboratory and cytology skills including diagnostics, her dental hygienist skills, including dental radiograph, dental charting, scaling and polishing and taking particular interest in emergency surgery and patient care. Amy has never shied from taking in animals who need a home and has a diverse household of both cats and dogs, which she takes on as fosters or, for our elderly friends, a peaceful end of life sanctuary. Devoting her time to excelling her technical skills as well as managing our busy practice has us giving her nothing more than extreme thanks and praise for always putting her patients first and always having their best interests at heart. Happy RVT month Amy! And Thank-you for all that you do!
Claire
Growing up closely with her own pets, lead Claire into the animal field, and then into her role as an RVT. She knew almost instantly that the bond she shared with her animals would lead her to want to help others who loved their pets just as much as she did. Starting at Coxwell Animal Clinic as a high school co-op, Claire chose to pursue her career as a vet tech at Seneca College, because she loved the hands-on approach. Graduating in 2017, Claire became a technician at Coxwell Animal Clinic and has been thriving in her new role. Two special boys found a way to her heart and her home, and Sebastian and Xavier have given her new career a new direction. Her soft spot for older animals is leading her to pursue her skills and knowledge in caring for our geriatric pets and helping them to age gracefully through pain management, and physiotherapy. Claire’s soft spot for seniors and continuing dedication to our four-legged family members gives us many reason to wish her a Happy RVT month! Thank-you Claire for all that you do!
Sam
Playing nurse to her family pets as a child set Sam up for a career focused on animals. It wasn’t until her best friend Ryder the Doberman came into the picture, that she decided to become a veterinary technician. Although he has now passed on, Sam focuses most of her career on eliminating breed specific stigma with her other Doberman Scout and works towards future qualifications of ascertaining a veterinary technician specialty in feline and canine behaviour. Graduating from Seneca College in 2013, Sam quickly found interest in the surgery aspect of her job, especially managing the anesthesia. She has a keen interest in canine and feline nutrition and continuing interest in canine physiotherapy. In 2015, she adopted a senior Chihuahua named Cody, and advocates for animals getting second chances. With her large undertaking of completing her specialty, Sam still manages to multi-task and always put her patients first. Happy RVT month Sam! And Thank-you for all that you do!
